Training And Support

Occupational First Aid

Over the last year we commenced our Occupational First Aid Training, 40% of DCIL staff are currently trained in this field. A lot of work still needs to be done in this area so we need all Personal Assistants to make every effort to attend training. Over the next year we plan to have 80% of all DCIL staff trained in this area.

This course has proved to be both challenging and also very rewarding to all who has participated over the past year. The level in which they are trained is at FETAC Level 5 standard which is a significant qualification and has boosted the confidence of our staff in their roles both in and out of the workplace.

Safer Moving & Handling People

In 2010, we continued in our efforts to update the skills of all our new and existing Personal Assistants in Safer Moving & Handling Training. To date we have 128 Personal Assistants trained in Safer Moving & Handling, this has been a great result, but I also need to encourage an outstanding PA’s to attend. It is our hope that all DCIL will have completed this course by the end of 2010.

We will then commence a roll out of refresher courses as certificates are only valid for two years. This Training is so significant in our work and without updating such skills we leave ourselves very vulnerable to Back Injury and in some cases losing their job to back injuries, etc.

We cannot emphasise how important it is for Personal Assistants to attend this Training. We acknowledge how difficult it can be to be released from work for Training days, however, it is a legal requirement that all PA’s attend this training.

Also, it is important to highlight to Leaders the significance of this Training. It is vital to raise awareness on Back Injury, the risks involved and new techniques & equipment that is now available to people in preventing injury.

Risk Assessments

To comply with current legislation (Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005), we have commenced Risk Assessments, these are carried out in the Leaders home or Personal Assistants place of work also giving consideration to the daily activities of Leaders and the levels of assistance required to carry out the tasks. DCIL will endeavour to carry out these Assessments with a minimum amount of intrusion and at all the times respecting the dignity of all Leaders and P.A’s involved.
